It’s such a wonderfully walkable city, even with the hills. One of my favorite walks is along the bay from Fisherman’s Wharf all the way across the Golden Gate Bridge. You pass the Aquatic Park, Fort Mason, the Marina, Crissy Field, the Presidio and Fort Point along the way. You feet will be very tired, but you’ll also be smiling when it’s over. You can take a side trip to the Palace of Fine Arts and the Exploratorium if you wish and can stop by Greens to fuel up and the Warming Hut for a coffee before walking up the the bridge.
The entire city always seems ready to have it’s photo taken
The Friends of the Library Bookstore at Fort Mason
The food – I’ve yet to have a bad meal in the city
The views. Many hills = many views
It’s always wise to carry a jacket, even in the middle of summer
Fog, not smog
The transit system. Trains, streetcars, cable cars, buses and electric buses. I’ve ridden all over the city and find the transit system works very well. It runs frequently enough to be useful and it goes just about everywhere. The last trip we even took the bus all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
The huge number of coffee shops
Golden Gate Park. This is not anywhere near the famous bridge with a similar name, but is located in the west part of the city, is over 50 city blocks in length and ends at the pacific coast. The Japanese Tea Garden, Rose Garden, Botanical Garden and so much more is located here. This was the first place I ever had the opportunity to stand beneath Redwood trees. Wonderful.
