AT&T Rant
June 19, 2009 at 5:42 am (Personal, Tech)
As a free service to AT&T, I’ve decided to help them be more truthful in their advertising.
In a previous post I said their slogan should be “Fewer Bars in Useful Places”. Today’s entry is “No Bars Where You Need Them”.
All of this stems from how lousy their network is on the rail system in Atlanta. Bear in mind that this city is home to AT&T’s headquarters and that they built a garage at the far end of the rail line for their employees to use. I certainly hope those employees don’t have work to do on the way in that requires using the AT&T GSM network because it isn’t going to happen.
Compare this to the T-Mobile network on the same rail system which is practically 100% the entire way, EVEN UNDERGROUND. I know this because they were my provider before I got sucked into the iPhone collective.
The iPhone is the only reason I’m with AT&T, and so far they aren’t giving me any reasons to stay with them when my contract expires.

Andrew Bird and Calexico at Cobb Energy Center
June 16, 2009 at 1:58 pm (Music, Personal)
Anne and I saw Calexico and Andrew Bird last night at the Cobb Energy Center in Atlanta.
Calexico turned out to be really great live, with lots of energy. We could have listened to them for much longer, but since they were the opening act, their set was fairly short.
Andrew Bird certainly more of a performance than a concert. He’s a great musician, but he was certainly putting on a show, especially compared to Calexico, who were there because they obviously love playing music.
Here are some crappy low light iPhone shots from the concert.

14th St. Lights

The light poles in this photo must be at least 100′ tall and are awesome to see in person. These are part of the new 14th Street bridge project. I saw them on the ground before they went up and didn’t really think much of them. It’s a different story when they’re in the air.

Last Time In Athens?
June 8, 2009 at 5:35 am (Food, Travel)
We were in Athens, GA over the weekend, moving Elizabeth out of her apartment. I just realized that this may have been my last trip there, at least for the forseeable future, and I’m going to miss certain things about the place.
There are a lot of good restaurants there. We had dinner at Inoko Sushi Express, an inexpensive Japanese place, and it was great as usual. The Grit remains one of my favorite restaurants on earth, and there is always time to grab a coffee from Jittery Joes.
However, I will not miss the drivers in Athens. Atlanta drivers can be bad, mostly because Georgia does not think drivers education is important (even if the new driver is from another country), but the drivers in Athens seem to have come to a group decision to make up for their lack of skill with speed and lunacy. Good times.
