Understanding countries through maps – Repost from F30

Active or deep interpretation of maps is a subject that isn’t taught nearly enough in schools, which is a bit of a pity as recognizing maps as clues to a country’s character can give students an interest in geography they’ve never had before. Simply taking a good look at a map of a country compared to the other areas nearby is often enough to give one a good idea of what sort of geopolitical situation it happens to be in, and in many cases a good enough understanding of this can aid in even predicting the future between two or more countries.

Sky

Shot this photo of the sky looking beyond the top of a parking deck. The clouds caught my eye.

Work

This shot is a few days old, before the stormy weather returned, and shows the campus where I work. You can’t miss these buildings if you drive through downtown Atlanta.

Nasty Clouds

Nasty looking weather seems to be moving in. The end of the drought in Georgia apparently means that our exciting afternoon weather has returned.

Midtown Congestion

It isn’t just the cars clogging up Atlanta these days. These buildings seem to be taking over West Peachtree Street.

14th St. Lights

The light poles in this photo must be at least 100′ tall and are awesome to see in person. These are part of the new 14th Street bridge project. I saw them on the ground before they went up and didn’t really think much of them. It’s a different story when they’re in the air.

Midday Atlanta Traffic

Here’s a shot of downtown Atlanta interstate traffic at about 1:00 PM this afternoon. Pretty light today.

Atlanta Traffic Photo

Here is a shot from last week. Traffic tends to be lighter during the summer and this shot is proof. Unfortunately it doesn’t capture the chaos that is moments away from any tranquil moment in Atlanta traffic. Someone is certain to cross several lanes of traffic and make some daring manuever any minute now.

Marta Art

Marta has art installations in most of the train stations so transit riders have something to look at other than gray walls or each other (there are also mice, but I’m sure they would prefer I not tell you about them). This photo is from the Midtown Station and is one I see almost every day.

Daily City Photos

While poking around on the Flagstaff Daily Photo blog, I realized there were links to many other daily city photos.

Here is the link to the city photo blog portal.
