“Jesus Camp” Review

Ran across the following information on The Macintosh Biblioblog and find it an interesting perspective…

=================

“Jesus Camp” Review:
I’m not a fan of Michael Moore. I think he’s a bully; never saw the anti-Bush propanda film. But this Jesus Camp, the latest of his sensational documentaries intrigues me. I might try and see it. From a review by David Byrne:

It focuses on a woman preacher (Becky Fischer) who indoctrinates children in a summer camp in North Dakota. Right wing political agendas and slogans are mixed with born again rituals that end with most of the kids in tears.

Ever since I heard The West Wing make the point that “Al Qaida is to Islam as the KKK is to Christianity,” I’ve long thought that some extreme aspects of today’s religious right differs very little in methodology in terms of unquestioning indoctrination.
The most profound question the review makes is to ask

how did accepting the evidence for climate change and global warming become anti-Jesus?

Why has the religious right jumped on this anti-climate change self-deception? I can only think that it is a result from lying in bed with corporate conservatives (with a clear stake in the issue) within the Republican party for the sake of political success.

I really, really think God wanted us to take care of the earth. ::shrug::

Brits All Over

Why is it that most of my favorite authors, musicians, comedians and actors are from that largest of all islands in Europe or their neighbor to the west? Is it the sense of humor, the reserve, the penchant for understatement, the seeming masterful ability to turn a clever phrase or express everything just so? Probably it’s all this and more.

Here’s an incomplete list…

On The Page
Douglas Adams
Bill Bryson (who isn’t actually, but might as well be, British)
G. K. Chesterton
Stephen Clarke
C. S. Lewis
Somerset Maugham
Michael Palin
J. K. Rowling (it’s truly evil the way she keeps killing off characters)
J. R. R. Tolkein

On The iPod
Andy Summmers
Athlete
The Beatles
Paul Carrack
Coldplay
Elbow
Engineers
Imogen Heap
Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits)
Level 42
William Orbit
Alan Parsons
Stereolab
Sting
K. T. Tunstall
U2

On The Screen (Hey, all of these are Scots!)
Sean Connery
Billy Connolly
Craig Ferguson
Liam Neeson

Then there are the ones from those islands down under…

Mel Gibson and Israel

So, Mel Gibson has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Not only that, but he has been accused of saying some unkind things about people of Jewish descent during the arrest. He has since issued a public apology and has asked to meet with Jewish leaders to apologize for his remarks. Of course he is being vilified in the press and now his planned miniseries about the Holocaust has been canceled by ABC.

There are many tragedies in this story; the obvious ones are the impact to his career, which will survive, and his family, who are probably more disappointed than anything else, but what about the loss of the miniseries that has been shelved by ABC. There is no doubt that the Holocaust story needs to be told and retold, because people seem to continually and intentionally want to forget that it happened. Consequently the loss of this reminder of our humanity and it’s often deadly failings could be the greatest loss from this incident.

This seems particularly poignant right now with Israel blowing Lebanon apart while hunting Hezzbolah, a radical group who has vowed to destroy Israel and the Jewish people. So Mel Gibson is anti-semetic for being an idiot while intoxicated and Hezzbolah is what? Misunderstood? What choice is Israel ever given in these matters? It always seems a choice of existence or oblivion for them.

Beat The Drum

Saw this article with a friend of mine today.

I’ve seen the movie he discusses in this article and encourage you to see it if you have the chance. It is an excellent film. Unlike a lot of stuff that lives on celluloid (and DVD) these days, this film has a purpose and a reason for being. It details the aids problem in Africa and how it destroys families and entire villages. It is heart-wrenching. Check it out here.
